“I am the resurrection and the life; those who believe in me,
though they should die, will come to life;
and those who are alive and believe in me will never die.”
John 11:25-26
Christians celebrate Funeral Rites to offer worship, praise and thanksgiving to God
with honour and respect for the gift of life now returned to God, the author of life.
The Catholic Church, wishing to surround all with compassionate prayer, extends spiritual aid to the dead, the consolation of hope to the living, with funeral ceremonies manifesting both God’s merciful love and our Pascal faith in Christ’s resurrection.
Rich in meaning, three principal ritual moments are meant to be celebrated communally:
VIGIL SERVICE ~ FUNERAL LITURGY ~ RITE OF COMMITTAL
The Church invites and encourages family members to participate and be involved as much as possible in choices of scripture, song and prayer
and in the designation of ministers of the liturgy
for vigil, funeral and committal services.
These tasks, rather than unduly stressful, can be acts of prayer and comfort
and will have therapeutic value.
No arrangements for funeral, burial or cremation should be finalized until relatives/family members have discussed them with the parish priest.
